Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you remove the wall between my kitchen and living room?

Often, yes. If the wall is load-bearing it needs a beam sized by a structural engineer, posts to carry the load down, and a building permit. Plumbing, wiring and ducts inside the wall also have to be rerouted.

Do I need a permit for a kitchen remodel?

Changes to plumbing, gas, electrical or structure generally need a permit. Replacing cabinets and counters in the same layout often does not. The requirement depends on the city and the scope, so confirm it before work starts.

What should I decide before the first visit?

Know whether the layout stays or changes, which appliances you want, and a budget range you are comfortable with. Photos, rough measurements and examples of kitchens you like make the first conversation more useful.

Can I stay in the house during a kitchen remodel?

Most people do. A temporary kitchen with a microwave, a small fridge and a sink elsewhere in the house makes it manageable.
